Not Peanut Butter and Jelly, not Laurel and Hardy, and not Abbott and Costello. With drama and out of control characters, sometimes you can barely tell the difference. Pro Wrestling has been included in movies for over forty years and some of them are, dare I say, pretty good! Here are some of the pro wrestling movies that need to be seen.

Body Slam (1987)

Remember “Face” from the hit television show “A-Team”? He’s the lead. His name is Dirk Benedict. Benedict plays M. Harry Smilac, a former music promoter who falls into debt and needs a gig. He tries to find a new musical act when he stumbles upon Rick Roberts (Roddy Piper). Smilac thinks Roberts is a musician, but he’s a professional wrestler. Body Slam is campy fun and tops a lot of bigger budget features presently. Sadly, Roddy Piper isn’t over the top like his wrestling persona in real life. Some other pro wrestlers such as Fatu, Captain Lou Albano, and Barbarian. You’d have a good time watching Body Slam once or twice, but after that, it gets old.

No Holds Barred (1989)

With Hulk Hogan, Zeus, Jesse Ventura, Gene Okerland, and Howard Finkel, “No Holds Barred” was so bad. This was the start of WWF/WWE movies as Hogan and Vince McMahon as executive producers. The premise was that Hogan was a popular wrestler named “Rip”. The network has a tough guy challenge show and wants Rip to face Zeus, a monster of a man. Rip declines and is pursued by Brell, the network executive. Rip’s brother Randy finds a warehouse where this fighting league is going on and tells Brell he is Rip’s brother and he’ll fight Zeus. Zeus beats him to a pulp and Randy is hospitalized…I know, this sucks. Finally, Rip beats Zeus at the end and Brell is electrocuted. It doesn’t stop there. Vince McMahon brings Zeus to fight Hulk Hogan in the WWF. You need to find the video for these matches.

Ready to Rumble (2000)

David Arquette and Sean Conn star in this “World Championship Wrestling” (WCW) influenced comedy. The duo watch their hero, Jimmy King, lose the WCW championship to “Diamond Dallas Page”, the rival of King, and want to help him get his title back. The trio prepare for King’s return match and finally, after a slew of WCW wrestlers try to stop him, Jimmy King regains the championship with help from his new friends. Ready to Rumble was a box office bomb, but it’s fun to see the WCW roster in a movie.

The Wrestler (2008)

Mickey Rourke plays Randy “The Ram” Robinson, a former superstar wrestler in the 1980s and now way past his prime winding down in the New Jersey independent circuit. Randy works part time at a supermarket and after fighting in a hardcore match, he suffers a heart attack and has bypass surgery. He quits wrestling for a while until fans recognize him at the store and he goes berserk and quits the job. Randy wrestles one more time against The Ayatollah. During the match he begins to feel chest pains as he climbs the top rope to hit his finisher “Ram Jam”, a diving headbutt. He salutes the crowd, leaps and the movie ends. It is said that Randy has died, others say he wins and gets his last sweet victory. You decide the ending. The Wrestler is considered by many as the best professional wrestling movie ever made.

Best A-Team Quotes

There is nothing like original 1980′s television content a la the A-Team. A-Team quotes abound with a cornucopia of quotable one liners, fun explosions, getaway driving, and prop cigars. With one liners abounding, and a cigar smoking Hannibal Smith leading the way, we could all use a little A- Team now and then.

I Love it when a plan comes together

Col. John ‘Hannibal’ Smith: There’s a plan in everything, kid, and I love it when a plan comes together.

Hannibal: [smoking a worn down cigar] I think better with a fresh cigar, Face…
Face: Oh sorry Hannibal, I had to use my last cigar to escape.
Hannibal: Too bad.
Face: Too bad? Too bad?
Murdock: [mouthing] Too bad?
Hannibal Smith: Now, we can do this the hard way, or the easy way. In about a minute I and my three friends are gonna unleash on you your worst nightmare. You’re gonna wish the earth opened up underneath your feet and swallowed you whole.
Mobster Tommy Tillis: What’s the easy way?
Hannibal Smith: Oh, that was the easy way.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow

Dark Night of the Scarecrow, released in 1981 is a story of revenge taken from beyond the grave. Bubba is the local mentally challenged guy in this small town who befriends Marylee, a little girl that is attacked by a wild dog. Of course there are those requisite locals who somehow come to the conclusion that Bubba had something to do with it and start hunting him down. They find him hiding and trying to disguise himself as a scarecrow in the field and shoot him; after killing him they find that he really wasn’t to blame and the little girl is just fine. As Halloween nears these locals notice that a scarecrow begins to mysteriously appear somewhere on their property and they begin to suffer rather deadly accidents.

Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow , 1999 – while it is not said specifically that it happens on Halloween, when you combine Tim Burtons dry wit with jack-o-lanterns and a headless horseman, it just naturally becomes synonymous with this delicious October holiday.

Satan’s Little Helper

Satan’s Little Helper, released in 2004 depicts a little boy who appears quite delusional as he meets a serial killer one Halloween and thinks that he is a video game character. The boy becomes his little helper with what he thinks is fake deaths but are actually quite real.

Trick ‘r Treat

Trick ‘r Treat 2009; the cool thing about this movie is that not only does it have five great ghost story type mini movies it also delves into many different Halloween mythologies including trick or treating and jack-o-lanterns.

Halloween

Halloween, released in 1978; what All Hallows Eve would be complete without this movie; the preeminent of the Halloween horror movies? It is the classic child in danger/babysitter theme that seems to just hit right in the middle of our childhood fears that seem to fuel this holiday.

How about watching scary Halloween movies that either intentionally or not, makes you laugh? If you are up for a little Halloween fun here are a few flicks you may want to check out:

The Midnight Hour

The Midnight Hour, released in 1985 has some great young stars including Shari Belafonte, Peter DeLuise and LeVar Burton, as part of a group of about 30 teens accidentally unleash this ancient curse that will raise the dead. Watch it for the stars and the unintentional laughs.

Boo

Boo, released in 2005 – you just know this is going to be a good movie when you hear one of the characters say (as they are walking towards a spooky looking building) “great, we are going to be those stupid kids.” And naturally when you get kids that are partying together with an old haunted hospital you wind up with dead kids.

Lady in White

Lady in White (1988); this terrifying story is made more so as it is told from the child’s memory using flashbacks and voiceovers. It begins on Halloween night when a young boy gets locked in a closet at school where he sees a murdered girl’s ghost and is terrorized by an actual live murderer.

Cemetery of Terror

Cemetery of Terror, 1985 just goes to show that movie teenagers are plain stupid in any language. On Halloween another group of teenagers decides it would be a great idea to go into an old abandoned house and then utilize this old satanic book they find to raise the dead (going so far as to break into the local morgue to steal a dead body that they feel would be perfect for raising). Naturally they decide to steal the body of this claw handed serial killer and, well, you can imagine the rest.

Ginger Snaps

Ginger Snaps, released in 2000, features a pair of sisters that appear to have a somewhat unhealthy bond and a morbid fascination with, of course, death. While sneaking out on Halloween night they get attacked by, of all things, a werewolf. The prettiest of the two, Ginger, gets bitten and starts to turn, going to a party where everyone assumes she is in costume (complete with tail) where she begins to attract her prey.

Here are a few that you may want to watch while having your favorite baseball bat tucked next to you:

House on Haunted Hill (1999)

This is one of the very few remakes that actually brings something new and different to the table by transforming the original version into something twisted and dark with great visuals and something that many don’t have which is explicit gore.

The Sentinel

The Sentinel released in 1977 is not necessarily the best of the haunted house movies but it has lots of scary, surreal imagery. It is about a model that moves into a new apartment in which the building just happens to be the gateway to Hell and in one scene she is treated to finding her father walking around in the apartment, but he just happens to be dead.

Candyman 1992

This movie leans towards a slasher/ghost story that plays on the fears of campfire stories and urban legends; similar to a “Bloody Mary” story where you say the name into a mirror and the ghost appears, complete with a hooked hand.

The Others

The Others released in 2001 set in a World War II mansion (haunted, of course) a mother and her two kids wait for their soldier father to come home. The movie has a great twist making it so that even those that don’t normally like horror movies will enjoy this one.

The Shining (1980)

Most movies featuring a haunted house have one scene that really epitomizes the evilness but only rarely do they live up to the build up, this one does not have that kind of let down. The iconic imagery really is quite nightmare inducing, even if it has been a few years since you have seen it. Redrum!

So, pop some popcorn, grab a few bottles of something cold and several friends then sit down to a ghost movie fest.
