For nearly a decade now, downloading music for free off of the internet has either been a huge business, or a huge business killer, depending on which side you look at it from. Those who oppose the downloading of free music (such as the Recording Industry Association of America, or RIAA) won a major victory in October, 2010 when a suit they filed back in June of that year was ruled in their favor, forcing the LimeWire P2P file-sharing software to shut itself down.

Since then, free music lovers everywhere have been searching for that illustrious replacement to their once-favored LimeWire. We’ve searched the internet high and low, and we’ve found you some software that you might just want to look into. Now, Man Certified does not condone the uploading or downloading of copyright-protected material, and we suggest that you use these programs for legal uploads and downloads only, of course. Now, with that being said, here are a few pieces of software that might just cure your LimeWire hangover.

1.) Frostwire

As soon as LimeWire went down, Frostwire seems to be picking up their slack. Frostwire claims itself to be an “absolutely free and open source”, and is P2P file-sharing software that runs off of BitTorrent and Gnutella. According to their website, Frostwire has been around since 2004, and you can download a free copy of their software (version 4.21.3) right off of their home page. If you happen to carry around an Android phone, there is a Frostwire app for you, if that’s your thing. Don’t get too excited just yet; early research and opinion says the app doesn’t exactly set the world on fire, if you know what we mean.

2.) Shareaza

Shareaza is apparently not bad, but you do have to be pretty careful. There is a Shareaza.com copycat site that tries to make you download stuff that you DON’T want on your computer. The real McCoy can be downloaded at shareaza.sourceforge.net. (Another way to tell is that the fake Shareaza is offering “Version 7 for Windows” right now, as the real Shareaza is on version 2.5.3.0) And speaking of downloads, apparently this one has some clout behind it. Shareaza pulls from EDonkey2000, Gnutella, Gnutella2, and BitTorrent. We hear that while Shareaza might be smaller than most, it can still get the job done.

3.) Vuze (formerly known as Azureus)

Bust out your wallets, because this one has a pay-to-play service ($24.99/year), but Vuze seems to be the tech geek’s best friend. Back in Q4 2010, Vuze threw its name in the hat for Apple TV, Research In Motion’s Blackberry devices, and even more Android devices than it already had. Not to mention the pre-existing support for several different gaming systems, Samsung TV’s, and TiVo. The pay version of Vuze (called Vuze Plus) also has built-in antivirus software and gives you the ability to burn an unlimited amount of DVD’s. (For $24.99, SOMETHING better be unlimited!) Either way, we hear this one is pretty easy to use, even if you’re a novice downloader. You can download this, or the free version (both 4.6) at vuze.com.

4.) uTorrent

uTorrent nicknamed itself “a (very) tiny BitTorrent client” and “a powerhouse with a tiny appetite” and they weren’t kidding. According to Chloe Albanesius of PCMag.com, the latest version downloads at just 320KB for Windows. It’s pretty much a skin-and-bones piece of software, but it has just enough oomph to download the few things you’ll want every so often. If you are looking into doing some heavy uploading or downloading, maybe uTorrent isn’t for you. However, if you’re looking for something free and tiny that also can be used on Linux AND Mac (yes, it’s supposedly stable) then maybe you should check this one out.

5.) LimeWire (!?!)

OK, it’s not TECHNICALLY LimeWire. It’s called “LimeWire Pirate Edition” or LPE. Cool, huh? Apparently a “secret dev [development] team” who had the stuff they needed, went “rogue” and posted this pirated version of LimeWire. It’s very similar to the last version of LimeWire before the site got axed (5.5.10), but there have been a few changes. For example, all dependancies on LimeWire’s servers are gone, the Ask toolbar has been unbundled, and all of the features of LimeWire Pro (you know, the version you were never willing to pony up for?) have been activated for free.

Oh, and if you happen to like a little controversy while you download your latest beats, than this is definitely the software for you. You see, it’s been in the spotlight lately thanks to a person who calls themselves “Meta Pirate”. Meta Pirate claims that he/she/they/it took the open code from LimeWire when it shut down, “tweaked it” for lack of tech terms, and released it as a free service. Now the RIAA is going after LimeWire (yep, again), saying that they had a former or current employee create this pirated version, and violated the court order to stop all operations. Meta Pirate says they are totally independent of LimeWire, LLC, and did this all on their own, referring to themselves as “curious monkeys”. Meta Pirate’s website has been shut down by court order too, but you can still download LPE from sites such as Tech Spot. Google it, you’ll find something.

You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

The following iconic guitarists have obviously owned several different guitars over the years that they have been playing but they all have one thing in common as well and that is a deep affection for one particular special “ax”. Let’s have a look at these legendary guitarists and their special guitars; starting with number 10 on the list:

10 – B. B. King and the renowned “Lucille”; while playing at a dance hall in Arkansas a fight broke out and some kerosene was knocked over which caused a huge fire. After rescuing his Gibson he found out that the fight had been over a woman named Lucille and has named all of his guitars the same in order to remind him to never fight over a woman.

9 – Keith Richards and “Micawber”; when he asked why he chose such an uncommon name for his guitar (the name is from a character in the book David Copperfield) he claims that the only reason is because when he screams it out everyone knows exactly what he is talking about.

8 – George Harrison and “Lucy”; the cherry colored Les Paul was given to him by Eric Clapton and was named Lucy in honor of Lucille Ball. Later Eric Clapton actually played the guitar as a favor to George when recording “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

7 – Stevie Ray Vaughn and “Lenny”; this vintage guitar was in a pawn shop in Austin, TX but the $350 asking price was not something he could afford back in 1980 so his wife, Lenora (Lenny), rounded up the $50 they were lacking from friends and bought if for his 26th birthday. He named it Lenny in her honor.

6 – Willie Nelson and “Trigger”; when a repair shop in Memphis was unable to repair one of his favorite guitars they offered to sell him a Martin which he did, sight unseen, and instantly fell in love with it, naming it after Roy Roger’s horse. He played the guitar so often that he wore a hole in the top; but he liked the unusual sound so much he refused to get it fixed.

5 – Neil Young and “Old Black”; Neil got this 1953 Gibson from Jim Messina in 1969 and then painted the original goldtop black. The instrument frequently goes out of tune according to his guitar tech, Larry Cragg, but Neil refuses to have the fingerboard re-fretted.

4 – Billy Gibbons and “Miss Pearly Gates”; while this ZZ Top guitar player is known for a big beard he has an even bigger guitar collection, however, his favorite is the 1959 Les Paul. The story is that they let a friend drive their 1930 Packard to Hollywood for a movie audition and when she landed the part they called the car Pearly Gates thinking it must have divine powers. The friend sold the Packard wired him the money and the guitar was purchased the same day also christening it Miss Pearly Gates.

3 – Eddie Van Halen and “Frankenstrat”; many guitarists have debated over whether the Gibson or Fender is the best guitar so Eddie just combined the two to create his Frankenstrat.

2 – Jimi Hendrix and “Woodstock”; while he was known to sacrifice many guitars by lighting them on fire but fortunately one survived and it was the one he played the legendary rendition of the Star Spangled Banner on at Woodstock.

1 – Eric Clapton and “Blackie”; Eric bought six Fenders at a music shop in Nashville and gave three of them away to Pete Townsend, Steve Winwood and George Harrison. He then decided to create one super guitar by using the best parts of the three remaining resulting in his legendary Stratocaster that he named Blackie after the black finish.

If you want music online and are willing to go off the beaten path as in willing to hear some music that is not always so popular on the radio there are plenty of free music downloads to be found on the Internet. Here are a few of the different places where you can find music downloads on the web.

Indy.tv is custom radio that enables you to find independent music online. You have to download Indy and then double click the title and you rate the music while it plays. The more you rate the more your preferences will be played.

Pandora is really great as it allows you to make as many different personalized stations as you care to and enjoy your free music downloads this way as well.

Sideload is a great free music online download site with a huge MP3 selection as well. This site has a great selection of different music that you can preview before downloading. When you find a tune you like simply click on the title and a new window opens with your free music download link.

Soundclick has been around since 1997 and has upwards of 2 million free music downloads available. They also offer streaming audio that can be used for radio stations and free videos.

BeSonic requires registration (but it is free) before having access to about 12,000 songs to download. Or, you can listen to the music online via their streaming audio. They have a search option available that helps you to quickly locate the music downloads that you want.

ArtistServer is actually a social site that hosts 8,000 legal and free music downloads. It also provides free blogs, photos and MP3 ringtones so be sure to check this one out.

Audio Archive is another good place when you are looking for a free music download; they have both an MP3 and audio library that has about 100,000 free digital songs. They also offer radio shows, poetry readings, live music recordings, books and music online.

Jamendo has about 7,000 different music downloads that you can share, review and if you like what you are hearing you can make a donation directly to the artists.

These are only a few of the sites that offer music online or free music downloads there are plenty more once you take the time to start searching, but in the mean time these should get you started.

It is obvious that the rhythm/music games genre is getting bigger all the time and selecting the best ones from the increasing number is getting more difficult. The same holds true for the different movie games that are available to those that have seen the movie a thousand times and are ready to be “in it”. To follow is lists of both that people really seem to enjoy.

When it comes to music games Rock Band 2, played on Xbox 360, is considered one of the best games of this genre because of its longevity, game play and value. It has a great playlist of it’s own but you can also import the list from game 1 and from LEGO Rock band. It offers great features and lots of different modes at various levels so that everyone, no matter what their skill level may be, can play and enjoy it.

In the movie games genre one of the all time favorites is Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay; it received numerous game of the year awards and many feel that it should be what all other movie video games should be modeled after. As Riddick you manage a dramatic escape out of Butcher Bay which just happens to be the deadliest prison in the galaxy.

Guitar Hero: Metallica is one of the best music games as it has something that many people think the others lack and that is a challenge and what they consider real heavy metal. If you like the old-school type of metal then this is the game for you as it has an amazing song list that has lots of notes. It can be a little hard to play, but the rewards are definitely worth it.

Lord of the Rings Return of the King is one of those movie games that everyone can enjoy playing. You will track the fellowship of the ring into the final quest in order to take care of Mordor’s evil forces. The game actually follows the movie line very closely and the graphics are considered excellent.

For music games that the whole family can enjoy then you should check out The Beatles Rock Band. It seems that no matter what type of music genre people say they prefer the Beatles game gives you fun, clean sounding and catch music that everyone recognizes and seems to enjoy.

And, for the last of the movie games it seems that Enter the Matrix is a game that many enjoy as a fairly decent type of action game based on the second movie, Matrix Reloaded. It also offers some great footage that was not used in the movie.

What goes better with alcohol (other than the obvious, of course) than music? Whether you are feeling down and need something to bring you back up or if you are already up and are ready to go, there is a song that goes with your mood. Think back to the simpler times when a cold drink and a classic jam would numb your senses in just the right way and put a smile on your face. There was a recent informal poll done on the “Top Ten Drinking Songs”, take a look and see if you agree or if you have a better list in mind.

Starting with number 10 – Cold Gin by Kiss, the ultimate ode to the male libido and gin; basically saying gin is the answer to all key relationship problems, or at least the ones that happen between the sheets.

Number 9 – Sublime’s “40 oz. to Freedom”; said to be one of the most ideal songs if you need a short hike away from problems and you can insert your drink of choice in front of the 40 oz and customize the song to suit your tastes.

At Number 8 we have “Gin & Juice” by Snoop Dogg; leading us to believe that with juice and gin anything is possible, that it earns you respect and you can get away with pretty much anything you want.

Number 7 – Semisonic’s “Closing Time” – this one is also on the list by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the most all time annoying songs. The song talks about it being last call, the harsh lights coming on and the last effort of finding someone for the night.

Coming in at number 6 is by The Doors “Alabama Song” or Whisky Bar; interestingly this song first appeared in a German opera in 1930 and when the keyboardist, Ray Manzrek heard it The Doors began playing it at the Whisky A Go Go.

Number 5 – “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks; it has proven to be one of the most popular of the country efforts in recorded history. He arrives drunk at his ex’s party and then toasts her and dismisses their former relationship and then it’s back to the bar.

Number 4 – Jimmy Buffet’s “Margaritaville” – his most popular single where he uses his own word of margaritaville to describe a rather alcohol induced, but low-key, state of mind.

Number 3 – “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” by George Thorogood; this song takes you through a mans odyssey of not being able to pay his rent and ends up with him in a bar. After hearing the title song so many times it is a given that you will soon be sending in your own order.

Number 2 – The Beastie Boys “Brass Monkey”; its pulsing beat and witty rhymes stands up against any of the rap contemporaries. The songs title is a drink consisting of vodka, orange juice and run, a little of this goes a long way.

And finally, at Number 1 the best drinking song of all time is “Have a Drink on Me” by AC/DC; although never substantiated many believe this was dedicated to the death of Bon Scott and his hard living, hard drinking ways. After mentioning at least 5 specific alcohols the remainder of the song exudes a happy message of partying hard and living carefree in the moment.

There you have it, the top ten, albeit informal, poll of drinking songs; if there are some you haven’t heard go listen to them or come up with your own list.
