5 Flicks To Scare You Into The Halloween Mood

Tags: , , , ,

Ok, perhaps you are into the really spooky, scary movies and if they take place on Halloween that just makes them even better; if so take a look at this list and rent a few or all of them to enjoy this Halloween:

Dark Night of the Scarecrow, released in 1981 is a story of revenge taken from beyond the grave. Bubba is the local mentally challenged guy in this small town who befriends Marylee, a little girl that is attacked by a wild dog. Of course there are those requisite locals who somehow come to the conclusion that Bubba had something to do with it and start hunting him down. They find him hiding and trying to disguise himself as a scarecrow in the field and shoot him; after killing him they find that he really wasn’t to blame and the little girl is just fine. As Halloween nears these locals notice that a scarecrow begins to mysteriously appear somewhere on their property and they begin to suffer rather deadly accidents.

Sleepy Hollow , 1999 – while it is not said specifically that it happens on Halloween, when you combine Tim Burtons dry wit with jack-o-lanterns and a headless horseman, it just naturally becomes synonymous with this delicious October holiday.

Satan’s Little Helper, released in 2004 depicts a little boy who appears quite delusional as he meets a serial killer one Halloween and thinks that he is a video game character. The boy becomes his little helper with what he thinks is fake deaths but are actually quite real.

Trick ‘r Treat 2009; the cool thing about this movie is that not only does it have five great ghost story type mini movies it also delves into many different Halloween mythologies including trick or treating and jack-o-lanterns.

Halloween, released in 1978; what All Hallows Eve would be complete without this movie; the preeminent of the Halloween horror movies? It is the classic child in danger/babysitter theme that seems to just hit right in the middle of our childhood fears that seem to fuel this holiday.

Five (Unintentionally Funny) Halloween Movies

Tags: , , ,

Is there anything better to watch on all Hallows Eve than a good scary movie that actually takes place on Halloween? How about watching scary movies that either intentionally or not, makes you laugh? If you are up for a little Halloween fun here are a few flicks you may want to check out:

The Midnight Hour, released in 1985 has some great young stars including Shari Belafonte, Peter DeLuise and LeVar Burton, as part of a group of about 30 teens accidentally unleash this ancient curse that will raise the dead. Watch it for the stars and the unintentional laughs.

Boo, released in 2005 – you just know this is going to be a good movie when you hear one of the characters say (as they are walking towards a spooky looking building) “great, we are going to be those stupid kids.” And naturally when you get kids that are partying together with an old haunted hospital you wind up with dead kids.

Lady in White (1988); this terrifying story is made more so as it is told from the child’s memory using flashbacks and voiceovers. It begins on Halloween night when a young boy gets locked in a closet at school where he sees a murdered girl’s ghost and is terrorized by an actual live murderer.

Cemetery of Terror, 1985 just goes to show that movie teenagers are plain stupid in any language. On Halloween another group of teenagers decides it would be a great idea to go into an old abandoned house and then utilize this old satanic book they find to raise the dead (going so far as to break into the local morgue to steal a dead body that they feel would be perfect for raising). Naturally they decide to steal the body of this claw handed serial killer and, well, you can imagine the rest.

Ginger Snaps, released in 2000, features a pair of sisters that appear to have a somewhat unhealthy bond and a morbid fascination with, of course, death. While sneaking out on Halloween night they get attacked by, of all things, a werewolf. The prettiest of the two, Ginger, gets bitten and starts to turn, going to a party where everyone assumes she is in costume (complete with tail) where she begins to attract her prey.

Ghost Movies Fly Back Into Season

There are those that consider a ghost story one of the scariest types of horror movies; a good one combines one part supernatural with one part murder mystery and mixes in some terror. Here are a few that you may want to watch while having your favorite baseball bat tucked next to you:

House on Haunted Hill (1999); this is one of the very few remakes that actually brings something new and different to the table by transforming the original version into something twisted and dark with great visuals and something that many don’t have which is explicit gore.

The Sentinel released in 1977 is not necessarily the best of the haunted house movies but it has lots of scary, surreal imagery. It is about a model that moves into a new apartment in which the building just happens to be the gateway to Hell and in one scene she is treated to finding her father walking around in the apartment, but he just happens to be dead.

Candyman 1992 – this movie leans towards a slasher/ghost story that plays on the fears of campfire stories and urban legends; similar to a “Bloody Mary” story where you say the name into a mirror and the ghost appears, complete with a hooked hand.

The Others released in 2001 set in a World War II mansion (haunted, of course) a mother and her two kids wait for their soldier father to come home. The movie has a great twist making it so that even those that don’t normally like horror movies will enjoy this one.

The Shining (1980) most movies featuring a haunted house have one scene that really epitomizes the evilness but only rarely do they live up to the build up, this one does not have that kind of let down. The iconic imagery really is quite nightmare inducing, even if it has been a few years since you have seen it. Redrum!

So, pop some popcorn, grab a few bottles of something cold and several friends then sit down to a ghost movie fest.

See What You’re Missing

I don’t claim to be a movie critic or movie expert, I’m just a fan. I’ve been watching movies since 1955, and I guess based on  conversations with my family, coworkers, and friends,  I know a little more than the average person on the street about movie titles, actors, and directors. Movies that might give a guy a little entertainment and open his eyes to some of the great actors and directors of  the past.  This section of Man-a-Mania will be dedicated to movies that aren’t on everybody’s  radar, especially if your under the age of thirty five.

We’ll highlight one actor and movie per month. Don’t be looking for car chases and shootouts with guns that never run out of bullets, hopefully if you haven’t  seen these movies before you’ll enjoy them or if you have  you’ll see something you missed.  Enjoy these selections for their combination of action, irony, cinematography, acting, direction, and thought provoking ideas.

This months movie selection is Anatomy of a Murder, nominated for seven academy awards. The 1959 classic stars James Stewart as a country lawyer defending a military man accused of murder. Directed by Otto Preminger and costarring Lee Remick, George C. Scott,  Ben Gazarra, and Murry Hamilton ( Mrs. Robinsons husband, and the Mayor in Jaws). A must see courtroom drama and classic film.

Walter Brennen

Three academy awards. Over two hundred film appearances spanning five decades.  Costarring roles opposite Hollywood icons John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Humphry Bogart, Gary Cooper, and Spensor Tracy.

This months featured actor, Walter Brennen usually played the crabby but good hearted side kick in many of Hollywood’s all time favorite movies.  Catch his performances in the films below, especially Northwest Passage starring Spensor Tracy. He played Hunk Marriner Robert Young’s (Father Knows Best, Marcus Welby) friend, drinking buddy, and Indian fighter. This 1940 adventure set in the mid 1700’s depicts the French and Indian War and is a must see for any action, adventure, and historical film fan.

Comedies Rule in 2010

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Perhaps the powers that be decided that with the state of the economy the general public needed a little relief; whatever the reason this seems to be the year of the comedy.

Starting with Letters to Juliet that came out on May 14 taking place in the land where Juliet met Romeo, Verona. While it starts out with Amanda Seyfried helping Vanessa Redgrave find her long ago lost love you know that Amanda will find her own love along the way.

On May 28th we were graced with Sex and the City 2 that starts two years later where the first one left off and the women setting off to far reaching desert locations. The plot seems to be immaterial with all of the “cosmo” acting and dialogue.

Get Him to the Greek that came out on June 4th is a great movie, especially for those fans of the crude humor of Judd Apatow; if you are not a fan then you may want to skip this movie. There are plenty of humorous antics in this crass buddy-style movie where Jonah Hill is the bumbling guy that is in charge of getting a rock star, Russell Brand to a reunion concert at the Greek Theater.

The Killers also came out on June 4th starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl as a married couple that were happy until she learned that at one time he had been a spy and that now there are assassins after them; Happy Anniversary honey.

On June 25th Grown-Ups came out where a group of grown men, David Spade, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, Kevin James and Adam Sandler, get together to relive their youth after the death of their high school coach.

And, on July 23rd we have Dinner for Schmucks to look forward to; Paul Rudd has to play a game called who can bring the biggest idiot to dinner in order to get a promotion at work that he is after. His idiot of choice happens to be the current king of slapstick Steve Carrell and what ensues are some very funny moments.

There are many good movies already out and some more scheduled for the rest of the summer and fall. With choices ranging from romantic comedies to buddy films there is sure to be something for everyone.

How to Setup for Backyard Movies

Tags: , , , ,

Gather your friends and family pop some popcorn and grab the lawn chairs then head to the backyard for a night at the movies. Backyard movies have become a very popular form of entertainment and when designed to fit in with your landscape movies done this way can also be visually pleasing.

The first thing you are going to need in order to show backyard movies is a projector; you need to consider two main factors: brightness and aspect ratio. The dimension of wide screen movies is 16:9 so you want to look for a projector with that ration. Depending upon the lighting in your backyard landscape movies generally look best at around 1,000 lumen for a smaller area and 2,200 for a larger one.

Your next concern is choosing a DVD player; normally hooking up a player to the digital projector is not a problem but just like any technology those that want to enjoy backyard movies may run into a glitch or two. Sometimes it is necessary for the projectors to convert a signal from the DVD player so that the pixels come out looking better. Try doing some research online to see which players and projectors work well together in order to get the most out of your movies.

Depending upon your landscape movies may have a different sound when played outside so if you are using a laptop in order to play the DVD’s you need to be sure that your sound card will support surround sound which is what many people prefer when enjoying backyard movies. For those that prefer it a little more simple you may want to consider getting some wireless speakers as it also makes it a little easier to walk around without having to worry about extra cords.

The screen on which you play the movies is also important and whether you want it simple or sophisticated can also mean the difference between an easy setup or a more difficult one. For some, backyard movies played on a white tarp draped over a fence or garage door is just fine while others prefer a real screen; in which case you can opt for an inflatable screen or you can purchase one specifically intended for playing movies outside.
