Many times a homeowner overlooks one way to increase their living space which can be done by remodeling the garage. There are so many different things you can do with this space create a bedroom or perhaps a game room for the whole family to enjoy.

One of the first things to find out is if your area requires you to a have a building permit; the reasons for this vary but some of the issues may include: structural soundness, windows/ventilation, insulation, electrical, exits and plumbing. Be sure not to skip this step in finding out if one is required as some places will fine you and/or require that you restore the area to its original condition if you decide to try to sell your home.

Then you need to decide exactly what you have to work with in terms of the walls, entries and floor. Generally there is a cement floor which is conducive to pretty much most any kind of flooring that you wish to install. Just be sure to seal the cement before doing any covering and if you use carpeting it may be wise to invest in some kind of double padding as it will help make it more comfortable and will help with insulation as well.

Next you should consider you choices for the ceiling, depending upon what you plan to use the space for you have options such as an exposed beam ceiling, tray ceiling, vaulted ceiling, drop ceiling or even a drywall ceiling.

Your next consideration is the walls; again you have many choices such as sheetrock or paneling. Or, you may want to construct some walls out of an insulated boarding, which is perfect if you are planning to use it as a game or play room or even as a home office.

Finally you will need to decide whether you want to hire a contractor to complete the remodel or do it yourself. Some choose to hire contractors for only part of the work such as the plumbing or electrical if you are not experienced in that area and then choose to do the rest yourself.

I have seen old knives that have been used and sharpened for decades that now have only 25% of the blade remaining from its original size. So one does not want to sharpen a knife more than absolutely necessary.

Using a chef’s steel, even frequently, is fine. The standard chef’s steel does not remove steel from the blade. Professional chef’s usually use the “steel” every time they are going to use their knife. What the “steel” does is simply align the microscopic teeth of the blade edge so that the sharpness of the edge lasts longer. This does not remove steel from the knife.

Unfortunately I’ve seen a trend of putting abrasives, like diamond powder, on the traditional chef’s steel. This is unfortunate as the abrasives will definitely remove steel from the blade. Just use a non abrasive steel. You may have seen how chef’s use great speed in applying the steel to their knives. This does nothing to improve the alignment process. The important thing is to maintain the same angle (as much as possible) as you run the steel along both sides of your knife. And apply the same number of strokes to both sides of the blade edge.

Do not apply a lot of pressure. You want about a 15 to 20 degree angle as you run the blade along the steel.
Also, please do not use an electric sharpener. These can be useful but many people generate too much heat and destroy the temper of the blade. If you ever use one, use a very light touch and be very brief.

So what should you do when the day comes that the knife needs to be sharpened? Although pricey, I would encourage you to find a cutlery store that offers professional sharpening. I know some professional knife sharpeners who charge $5 dollars an inch. This is mostly for high end restaurants. I don’t think it will cost you that much, but it might. Personally I think it is worth it for a high quality blade.

- Quick Steel

Even the thought of organizing the garage is enough to bring some men to their knees (and of course it doesn’t help when it is not your idea to do so, but that’s another thing altogether); but the sooner you get it done the better off you will be and the more peace you will likely have as well.

One of the most important things to remember is that when you organize your garage you will need to designate a place for everything while still ensuring that all of your items are easily accessible. If possible start by taking everything out of the garage, just pile it onto the driveway or grass and then begin sorting everything into different categories such as lawn maintenance items, toys, electric tools, sporting equipment, etc. Of course, be sure to throw away all items that are broken beyond repair (yes that includes those that you think you may be able to fix…someday) and items that you no longer need.

Start by installing some type of a hanging rack for those lawn tools which helps to keep them within easy reach while keeping them out of the way and providing you with more space. You can either make one yourself of purchase one pre-made and install it or have someone install it for you if you are not sure of your own capabilities (hey, you do not have to tell anyone that you didn’t do it yourself).

It is also a good idea to have enough room to rotate seasonal items; for example when it is close to winter make sure to have shovels, snow blowers, sleds, etc. easy to get to and likewise during the summer be sure to have any outdoor furniture accessories, toys or pool accessories where you can get to them quickly.

You can also gain some additional storage space by installing cabinets or shelves which again you can do yourself or hire someone to do for you. Free standing cabinets are also a good idea for some sporting equipment, toys and the materials that you need for things like washing your car.

It may seem like an intimidating job but once it is done you will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner and you may just get a special dinner out of the deal for being such a great “handyman”.

Have you finally gotten fed up with looking at the exceptionally low hanging picture that is strategically placed to hide a hole in the wall? Perhaps that water stained part of the ceiling is looking worse by the day or your wife is tired of asking you to fix that hole in the drywall, the one where the doorknob kind of went through the wall when the door flew open; in that case it just may be time to find a drywall handyman.

Some people prefer hiring a drywall contractor if the job appears to be a large one; however, for smaller jobs consider getting some handyman estimates as they just may be less expensive. Most of the smaller drywall repairs like nail pops or nail holes are not that difficult to complete, in fact some of the more ambitious homeowners try to do it themselves. But, you should keep in mind that a drywall handyman has the expertise and the proper tools to ensure the job is done correctly and quickly with no mess or damage.

There are many different reasons that you may need the services of a drywall handyman, including wall cracks that can be caused by natural ground shifting that show up at the corner of a window or door at the top since they are the walls weakest points. You may also need to obtain handyman estimates to help repair those nail pops that is a fairly common occurrence in most every home. They are the small round breaks that occur in the wall that happens when the nail or screw that was put in place to hold the drywall breaks out through the wall.

You can’t repair drywall just be filling in the crack or hole, or even just patching the place where the nail came through, it requires a good finishing touch which is just what hiring a good drywall handyman will do. The handyman estimates should include the cost of matching the texture of the entire wall to the portion that needs to be repaired; the fact that it is included indicates you are hiring someone that knows what they are doing. They should also tell you that any areas that are repaired need to be left along to dry for at least 24 hours between each coat, so be careful about hiring someone that says they can get the job done in single day.

If you would like to increase your living space a basement renovation may be the best way to do it and a basement remodel project can usually be done with a minimum amount of expenditures. This is an exceptional way to add space since it utilizes an area that is there already; it can be used for rec rooms, additional bedrooms, a family room or any other number of uses.

All basement construction and remodeling should start with the floor; newer homes that have basements are normally constructed from a concrete block or poured foundation that is on footings and then a concrete floor. These homes usually have a good drainage system that helps keep water away from the structure itself which minimizes the chance of moisture problems. Since an older home may have been built on a dirt floor basement foundation a basement renovation in an older house may have to include constructing a new concrete floor. This can be a major job and unless you have the experience it is a good idea to hire a reliable contractor to do this for you.

As an alternative to constructing a cement slab for your basement remodel job is to install a subfloor made of wood over the existing concrete after uneven areas have been leveled. However, it is not a good idea to use this method if you think that moisture could be a possibility as the pockets that are between the concrete and the wood floor may become inaccessible areas for mildew and mold to form, causing possible odor and health problems once the basement construction is completed. If water were to seep into your basement the whole wood floor would then need to be taken out in order for the area to dry effectively.

You do have other options when it comes to flooring for your basement renovation; if the concrete is just uneven or cracked you can use a floor leveling compound and then cover it with carpet or some kind of laminate. If you already know that the area is prone to moisture then consider gluing carpet directly to floor during the basement remodel; this way if there is water damage it can be cleaned and the carpet can be left where it is to dry which minimizes the cost of water damage restoration if necessary.

If you are considering the sale of your home you may want to sink a little money into it first; any home improvement is a help, however there are some specific areas that you may want to consider first. If you are not much on making repairs or improvements you may want to contact some remodelers and obtain a few remodel estimates.

The experts tell us that if you have to spend some money fixing up your home then you should put it into kitchen or bathroom remodeling as these are the areas that most home buyers seem to notice the most. Keep in mind that if you plan to finance your home improvement project your finance company may ask for several remodel estimates and may ask for copies of the estimates from the remodelers as well.

Your remodel estimates can be obtained in a few different ways depending on how large or project is going to be and your personal preferences. Many people hire a general contractor who then contacts several different remodelers for different parts of the project and comes up with one total price for you. This is generally a good way to go unless you have specific people in mind for certain jobs like plumbing that do not normally work with contractors.

If you plan on contacting each of the remodelers yourself for your home improvement jobs then you will need to get written remodel estimates from each one of them. The best way to get accurate quotes is to be sure that each party involved has as much information as possible and to ask questions; make sure that you know who will be purchasing what materials, etc. If you plan on selecting certain fixtures or accessories make sure they know exactly which ones to get to avoid any misunderstandings.

Other details that are involved when you hire individual remodelers include coordinating delivery with when the items will be needed if you are responsible for obtaining the items, so be sure that you check schedules. You may also want to be sure that your remodel estimates also include the cost of debris removal; this is an often overlooked detail and can get expensive so you may want to consider asking the individual workers for suggestions.

With spring and summer fast approaching it is time to start thinking about your yard and gardening tools replacing or repairing as necessary. Backyard tools can only work so well without having any type of maintenance; if your hose leaks you will waste water and money, etc. Here are a few tips on what you can do to ensure that your yard tools are in good working order.

Start with the lawnmower as it is one of the major yard tools and change the filter if you have not done so since last year; if it is a paper filter then replace it, otherwise you can take it out and clean it with soapy warm water. After disconnecting the spark plug turn it over on its side and clean out the old debris and grass, using a screwdriver or something similar for difficult clumps. You can also use the water hose to help spray it clean; using a disinfecting cleaner if your yard had any kind of a fungus.

Another one of the backyard tools to check is the gardening water hose, check it carefully for cracks and holes. If you only have a minor crack or hole you can choose to repair it using something like plumbing tape but check it often to be sure that it holds and doesn’t leak. If you use more than one hose then be sure to check the washers where the two connect together; you can pick up replacement washers at any hardware or home store.

Weed-eaters are also yard tools that come in very handy; the amount of area that you need to edge and the number of plants or trees that you need to get around has a lot to do with the type of weed-eater that you should get. Your local home store can offer valuable advice on which model to get as well as the pros and cons of gas or electric ones. Just be sure that the base guard and the handle are on securely before starting so that they do not fly off or slip while operating it.

Your supply of gardening backyard tools should also include some kind of hedge clippers; to ensure that the blades are sharp use heavy gauge grit sandpaper or take them to a shop to have them sharpened in order to keep your shrub lines clean.

Trying to keep up the value of your house means that you are constantly changing and adjusting no just the inside of your home but the outside as well which is one reason that backyard landscape design has become so popular. Contacting a landscaping services company and gathering some pool landscaping ideas and completing the project is a great way to help increase your homes value.

One way to get the juices flowing about pool landscaping ideas is to start with the pools layout; if it is easily accessed, especially by kids, then you probably have your first backyard landscape design idea already done for you as you will need a way to limit that access. You should probably start with some kind of a fence and then you can ask the landscaping services company to help “disguise” it by putting in some tall bushes or trees, which also makes it much nicer to look at. You can also try using some kind of climbing vines or plants to help hide the gate that will be in the fence.

Landscaping services can offer other pool landscaping ideas such as the addition of stones or rocks; adding a rock garden or something similar helps keep the whole area well accented and defined without resulting in any kind of high, time intensive maintenance. You can use the boulders or stones to create a border or arrange them in varying patterns for a more pleasing look.

Many people may feel that there are not any good backyard landscape design ideas if you have an above ground pool; however you do have some landscaping options available that can add to the appeal of your pool. One of the most popular pool landscaping ideas for above ground pools is to add a deck as a way of creating both style and balance to the area. Making the deck multiple levels is a great way of accomplishing this and it appears to blend into both your home and the rest of the landscaping. Adding some large potted shrubs and trees all around the deck will give it a more relaxed feeling and with the addition of some patio furniture you can create an area that will seem miles away from the rest of the world.

People are always looking for ways to add to the value and appeal of their homes and according to the experts one area of particular interest is the bathroom. It is estimated that the average return on an investment in bathroom remodeling is between 92 and 101 percent; with that figure going even higher if you are located in a large metropolitan area. So, find yourself a good bathroom handyman and get started on your new bathroom project.

It is believed that your bathroom is among the highest valued areas in your home and there are ways that you can spruce it up with minimal bathroom remodeling. The shower or bathtub is considered the focal point and doing some work in this area can make a huge difference in the overall appearance of your bathroom. If you do not want to completely replace the fixtures consider using a bathroom handyman to help you install an acrylic liner over your existing shower or tub and the wall area surrounding it; this will completely change the look of your bathroom.

Since the lighting in your bathroom is considered an essential element you should pay special attention to this part of your bathroom remodeling. Over time moisture and everyday wear and tear can destroy the looks of lighting fixtures, updating these can freshen up the bathroom in a fairly easy and relatively inexpensive manner. Use a bathroom handyman to help you replace old fixtures with newer, updated ones to create an inviting ambiance to the room.

Another vital part of bathroom remodeling is paint; a new color can help enhance the room’s appearance dramatically. Many feel that due to the smaller size of a bathroom it is a good place to experiment with bolder colors and designs, making coral and red tones matched with white a very popular choice. If you want a more spa style relaxing feel then you would want to choose blue tones combined with sandy, creamy colors. Due to their size it only takes a day or two to paint them, just be sure that your bathroom handyman uses a mildew and mold proof primer.

Finish your bathroom remodeling project by adding new accessories such as towels that match the tub and call color or change out the knobs and handles on your cabinets to a more modern look. These details are a great way of changing the look without incurring a great deal of expense.

There are many little home repair jobs like fixing a door that doesn’t close tightly, tightening a banister, repairing a hole or even a small remodel project that may be quite easy to do but are just simply annoying, which is where a handyman fits into the picture.

However, in this day and age finding a traditional handyman or what is commonly thought of as one can be difficult which is largely due to the shift of the worker to newer professions slowing diminishing their availability. It seemed like during the boom time of the 1980’s the only way you were going to get any kind of a professional company out for a small home repair like fixing the porch steps was to get a major remodel project done and make that little small repair a part of the bigger job; most contractors were so busy that they did not have time for the smaller jobs.

However, many people are under the misconception that hiring a handyman is always less expensive that hiring someone that is a licensed or certified professional plumber, electrician, carpenter or whatever specialists is needed. This is not true because as a general rule they make their living by charging a certain hourly rate and often times will have a minimum charge required just for showing up, they do this because you can imagine having to drive about a half an hour just to do a small home repair or remodel job taking about 20 to 25 minutes without having a minimum charge, well the cost of gas alone would put them out of business.

Before you hire a handyman to do those small home repair jobs walk through each of the rooms in your house making notes on what needs to be done and then do the same thing on the outside of the house and yard or whatever extra areas you may have. This is helpful so that you will be sure to have everything listed that you want done so that they can work consistently through the day, week or however long it takes; this cuts down on the amount of travel time (reducing the cost) that may have been needed if you were requesting only one repair or remodel at a time.
